Itinerary to Trikora Peak – Lorentz National Park, Papua
Day 1: Arrival in Wamena – Free and Easy
Upon arrival at Wamena Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to your hotel for check-in. The rest of the day is free for you to relax or explore the area on your own. You will stay overnight at the hotel, and full board meals will be provided.
Day 2: Trikora Trekking
After breakfast, you will set off on your trekking adventure. The journey begins with a drive to the southern side of Lake Habema in an off-road vehicle, accompanied by your guide, cook, and porters. The road conditions and weather may impact the travel time, so the entire day is scheduled for this ride. Once you reach the drop-off point, you will leave the vehicle behind and set up your tent camp in the typical highmoor landscape.
Day 3: Trikora Trekking
Today, you will embark on a 6-hour trek. The day starts with crossing the Wamena River, followed by trekking through vast open grasslands adorned with picturesque tree ferns. A short lunch break will be taken along the way. By early afternoon, you will reach your campsite for the night, where you will rest and prepare for the next day.
Day 4: Trikora Trekking
Your trek continues with a 3-4 hour journey until you reach the famous Somalak Cave. This spacious cave provides shelter for your entire crew, with enough room to sleep and cook, and offers protection from the rain. The cave holds historical significance, as it was first used as a campsite during the Lorentz Expedition in 1905. Since then, it has become an important waypoint for all expeditions to Mount Trikora.
Day 5: Trikora Trekking
Today, you will ascend to the base camp located at the foot of the Trikora Main Massif, which will take about 2-3 hours. After setting up camp, weather permitting, you may have the opportunity to climb Trikora Minor, a nearby peak. On a clear day, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the central highlands and the Baliem Valley in the distance.
Day 6: Trikora Trekking
Before dawn, you will begin the ascent of Mount Trikora. The trek to and along the ridge is fairly easy but long. However, the final ascent to the highest rocky promontory is difficult and requires professional equipment. After reaching the peak, you will descend to the camp where your crew is stationed, just beneath the base camp. This camp is located in an area where you can find enough wood for cooking.
Day 7: Trikora Trekking
You will begin your descent and trek back toward the meeting point near Lake Habema. The day will end with a night camp in the forest, where you can rest after the day’s trek.
Day 8: Trikora Trekking – Return to Wamena
The day begins with a short trek of 1-2 hours until you reach the pick-up point near the road. By noon, you will meet your vehicle for the drive back to Wamena. Once in Wamena, you will check back into your hotel for an overnight stay, with full board meals provided.
Day 9: Wamena – Departure to Next Destination
After breakfast at the hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back to Jayapura, Bali, or your next destination. The tour concludes with fond memories of your adventure.
