The land of Papua never ceases to convey its natural charm throughout the universe. Snow-covered mountains, oceans full of charming fish, enchanting stretches of white sand, green lakes and valleys, so many and many more that have not been counted by the media and have not been seen by the eye.
Usually a valley is surrounded by stretches of green grass and reeds. However, not in the Baliem Valley, Wamena Papua Mountains. This valley is surrounded by stretches of purple reeds. This valley is located in Parema Village, Wesaput District and in Aikima Village, Hubikosi District. Other stretches of purple color, it turns out, also exist in Napua District and Walesi District.
This natural wonder only occurs once a year, namely in May. This flower is a type of grass or reed plant that is commonly called by the local community as Lagalaga Eka or Owasi-Wasika which creates the magic of the purple color. The beauty of nature is believed by the local community to have started in the mid-1970s.
The charm of the purple color of the grass is also located not far from Wamena City, the capital of Jayawijaya Regency. The travel time is only around 5-20 minutes which can be reached by two-wheeled vehicles or four-wheeled vehicles, even this location can be reached on foot.
May Grass, sometimes people also call this grass. This grass with a dominant purple color only occurs in early May every year. However, at the end of May, the grass begins to change color.
The May Grass phenomenon is believed to be a new tourist destination in Wamena City. The people of Wamena even flock to take selfies or simply witness the change in color of this grass which only occurs in May.
Now, tourists who see the magic of this grass up close are not only from Wamena, but also many from outside Wamena, for example from Jayapura City and its surroundings and other areas in Indonesia.
